Community Outreach

Food for the needy during Ramadan month

Madam Norizan Zainol Abidin, who lives in a three-room rental flat, is expecting her eighth child. To make ends meet, the housewife has been selling cookies for four months. On Sunday, she was one of 500 families living in rental flats at four estates to receive a hamper containing everyday food items such as sugar, oil and noodles. She said: “This helps me as my situation is difficult.”
The initiative is part of the annual Ramadan project by Malay-Muslim self-help group Yayasan Mendaki to reach out to low-income families. More companies and professionals have joined in this year. New volunteers and donors include those offering medical services and even nutritional advice.
Among them was Preciouz Kare, which provides mobile medical services such as drawing of blood, administering of injections and blood pressure monitoring. It provided basic health-care screening at an event where the hampers were given out, at Yung Sheng Road in Jurong.
Dr Saiful Nizam, 36, a general practitioner with 12 years’ experience and a director at the firm, said: “We have to do our bit to give back to society.” In addition, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim gave out hampers and cooked food to some 70 families in the Jurong area. He was joined by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is an MP for Jurong GRC.
Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli and MPs Zainudin Nordin and Intan Azura Mokhtar handed out hampers in Woodlands, Tampines and Buangkok. (Link to article)
